Overview of Stratigraphy and Mapping of Shale Bodies
Reservoir Science | Volume 3, Issue 1: 26-37, 2027 | DOI: 10.62762/RS.2026.712719
Abstract
Shales and mudstones are fine-grained sedimentary rocks of global extent and considerable economic importance. Dating them is not straightforward, because clay minerals such as illite can reset isotopic systems during diagenesis. K-Ar, Ar-Ar and Rb-Sr dates of shales therefore often record diagenetic events rather than deposition. Sm-Nd and detrital-zircon U-Pb data mainly constrain provenance, whereas Re-Os data from organic-rich mudrocks can give depositional ages, and Re-Os data from oils constrain hydrocarbon generation. U-Pb dating of zircon from interbedded volcanic ash provides the most direct depositional age. Carbon-isotope excursions, elemental ratios, redox-sensitive trace metals,... More >

Chemical Pre-Flush and Additive Strategies to Enhance CO$_2$ Solubility and Injectivity in Deep Saline Aquifers: Mechanisms, Evidence, and Field Readiness
Reservoir Science | Volume 3, Issue 1: 1-25, 2027 | DOI: 10.62762/RS.2026.344933
Abstract
Deep saline aquifers offer the largest global capacity potential for geologic carbon storage, yet storage performance is frequently constrained by coupled limitations on \COtwo{} dissolution (solubility trapping) and injectivity under high-salinity conditions. Elevated ionic strength suppresses \COtwo{} solubility via ``salting-out'' effects. Meanwhile, near-wellbore dry-out during injection of dry or undersaturated \COtwo{} can concentrate brine and precipitate salts, reducing permeability and injectivity. Mineralogy and \COtwo{}-brine-rock wettability further control multiphase flow topology, interfacial area for dissolution, capillary trapping, and compatibility of additives with reservoi... More >

In-situ Hydrogen Production in Natural Gas Reservoirs: From Methane Conversion Mechanisms to Techno-economic and Environmental Feasibility
Reservoir Science | Volume 2, Issue 4: 324-364, 2026 | DOI: 10.62762/RS.2026.563836
Abstract
In-situ hydrogen production from natural gas reservoirs (IHP-NG) is an emerging pathway for low-carbon hydrogen by converting methane-rich subsurface resources while retaining carbon-bearing byproducts underground. This review critically evaluates the reaction mechanisms, experimental and modelling evidence, techno-economic position, life-cycle implications, and deployment challenges of IHP-NG. Unlike heavy-oil in-situ combustion gasification, IHP-NG is governed mainly by methane conversion reactions, including steam methane reforming, partial oxidation, autothermal reforming, methane cracking, dry reforming, and water--gas shift, alongside competing pathways such as methanation, reverse wat... A Sensitivity-Driven Inversion Framework for Efficient Calibration of 3D Geomechanical Models: Application to a Shale Reservoir
Reservoir Science | Volume 2, Issue 4: 305-323, 2026 | DOI: 10.62762/RS.2026.836628
Abstract
Accurate in-situ stress characterization is essential for hydraulic fracturing design in shale reservoirs, yet 3D geomechanical model calibration still relies on iterative trial-and-error procedures that are computationally intensive and physically opaque. Sensitivity analysis, though widely used to evaluate the influence of elastic parameters, is typically treated as descriptive rather than predictive. This work proposes a sensitivity-driven inversion framework for efficient calibration of horizontal stresses in 3D geomechanical models. Controlled perturbation simulations on a baseline model quantify the responses of maximum and minimum horizontal stresses ($S_H$ and $S_h$) to variations in... More >

Supervised Seismic Facies Classification in Ataga Field of Niger Delta Basin using a Thalweg Tracker and Deep Learning Approach
Reservoir Science | Volume 2, Issue 4: 289-304, 2026 | DOI: 10.62762/RS.2026.333274
Abstract
Seismic facies classification remains a critical yet challenging task in subsurface characterization due to the complexity of depositional systems and limitations of manual interpretation. This study presents a supervised deep learning workflow for seismic facies prediction using a dip-steered median filtered (DSMF) seismic volume. Ten facies label sets, representing minima and maxima responses, were derived from unsupervised vector quantization (UVQ) clustering and subsequently refined using Thalweg tracking, with 1,500 samples per class. These labels, together with the DSMF volume, were used to extract 3D cubelets (41×41×3) for training convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Three archite... More >

Determination of Reserve Parameters of Gulong Shale Oil Reservoir and Its Geological Significance
Reservoir Science | Volume 2, Issue 4: 276-288, 2026 | DOI: 10.62762/RS.2026.864544
Abstract
The pore structure of continental shale reservoirs is complex and diverse, exhibiting multi-scale pore size distributions spanning from nanometers to micrometers. In particular, accurate porosity measurement has remained a major challenge in shale reservoir characterization. To achieve accurate porosity determination for continental shale, this study takes the Gulong shale as a case example. Based on the fluid occupancy characteristics of shale pores, the pore space is classified into three types: gas-occupied, water-occupied, and oil-occupied pores. The volumes of these three pore types are measured experimentally via kerosene saturation, ethanol extraction, and solvent washing, respectivel... More >

Integrated Seismic Interpretation and Petrophysical Evaluation for Hydrocarbon Volumetric Estimation in the BUKS Offshore Field, Niger Delta, Nigeria
Reservoir Science | Volume 2, Issue 3: 261-271, 2026 | DOI: 10.62762/RS.2026.932280
Abstract
Hydrocarbon reserve estimation and reservoir characterization remain critical aspects of field development planning, particularly in mature offshore basins such as the Niger Delta. This study integrates 3D seismic interpretation with petrophysical analysis to evaluate reservoir quality and estimate hydrocarbon volumes within the BUKS offshore field, Niger Delta, Nigeria. Structural interpretation of the seismic data identified a NNW-trending rollover anticline associated with four major listric growth faults (F1–F4), forming the principal trapping system in the field. Petrophysical evaluation of four wells revealed favourable reservoir properties, with average porosity values ranging from... More >
