Abstract

Student mental health has become a core issue in university governance, yet existing support models remain insufficiently adaptive to the ecosystem of arts education, which is shaped by public performance, iterative critique, and identity exposure. This practice-oriented paper develops a counselor-led mental health support model for arts major students through a narrative review of relevant literature, reflection on the authors' long-term front-line counseling and student-affairs practice, and the analysis of illustrative de-identified composite cases derived from real practice. Drawing on ecological systems theory, the paper argues that sustainable support must link micro-level counseling work with meso-level studio and peer cultures, exo-level family and labor-market pressures, and macro-level university governance arrangements. The cases on anxiety management, self-esteem rebuilding, and crisis response show how emotional validation, staged task design, critique reframing, and coordinated referral can be integrated in the arts education context. The paper further identifies major implementation challenges and proposes optimization pathways that include critique-culture reform, faculty feedback-literacy training, family mental-health workshops, and ecosystem assessment indicators. The study contributes a conceptual framework and practice-based model development pathway for building a sustainable educational ecology for arts major students.

All illustrative cases presented in this paper are de-identified composite cases constructed from recurring practice patterns; they contain no personally identifiable information and do not correspond to any single individual. All procedures were conducted in accordance with the ethical standards of the relevant institutional committees and with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki.
