Identification and Distribution Characteristics of Mudstone Intercalations in Ultra-Deep Tight Fractured Sandstone Gas Reservoirs: A Case Study of the Keshen A Gas Reservoir, Tarim Basin
Journal of Geo-Energy and Environment | Volume 2, Issue 1: 34-45, 2026 | DOI: 10.62762/JGEE.2025.797111
Abstract
The ultra-deep tight sandstone gas reservoirs in the Tarim Basin, exemplified by the Keshen A gas reservoir, face escalating challenges of water invasion and pressure maintenance after years of production. Interlayers within these reservoirs serve as critical geological barriers, yet their spatial distribution remains poorly resolved due to limitations in conventional identification methods. This study integrates core, logging, 3D seismic, and production data within a sequence stratigraphic and reservoir geology framework to establish a ``core-logging-seismic'' collaborative identification system for argillaceous interlayers. Two main interlayer types—argillaceous and physical—are identi... More >

Natural Gas Transit from West Africa to Europe (Africa Atlantic Gas Pipeline) to Maximize Energy Security and Transit Revenues by 2050
Journal of Geo-Energy and Environment | Volume 2, Issue 1: 1-33, 2026 | DOI: 10.62762/JGEE.2025.372522
Abstract
The Africa-Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP), also known as the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, is a major transcontinental infrastructure project poised to connect West African gas reserves with North African networks and European markets, potentially reshaping regional energy dynamics, boosting economic development, and enhancing energy security. Its strategic importance has grown amid Europe’s urgent need to diversify away from Russian gas imports and Africa’s dual challenge of resource-based development and sustainable local energy access. Despite increasing interest, there is a lack of integrated, quantitative evaluation of competing gas transit strategies considering technical, economic,... More >

Professional Evaluation and Distribution Patterns of Shale Gas Reservoirs in the Wufeng Formation-Long 11 Sub-member of Well Block Z205, Sichuan Basin
Journal of Geo-Energy and Environment | Volume 1, Issue 2: 96-105, 2025 | DOI: 10.62762/JGEE.2025.365363
Abstract
The deep shale gas ($\geq 3500$ m) in the Z205 well area is a critical exploration and development target in the Sichuan Basin. The shale gas reservoirs of the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation -- Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation (Long 1$_1$ submember) in this area are characterized by deep burial and significant vertical and lateral heterogeneity. The Long 1$_1$ submember is subdivided into the Wufeng Formation, Long 1$_1^1$, Long 1$_1^2$, Long 1$_1^3$, and Long 1$_1^4$. This study conducts a detailed stratigraphic comparison based on integrated logging, core analysis, and analytical test data from the well area, clarifying the longitudinal and lateral distribution patterns of the reservoi... Enhancing the Sustainability of Underground Battery Storage: A Robust SOC Estimation Model Against Thermal Variations for Green Energy Systems
Journal of Geo-Energy and Environment | Volume 1, Issue 2: 88-95, 2025 | DOI: 10.62762/JGEE.2025.689319
Abstract
The widespread adoption of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is crucial for integrating intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind into the power grid, thereby advancing the goals of green energy. Deploying BESS underground offers a sustainable solution to land constraints and safety concerns. However, the dynamic and complex thermal environment underground severely challenges the accurate State-of-Charge (SOC) estimation, which is vital for the safety, longevity, and operational efficiency of BESS. Data-driven SOC models often suffer from performance degradation due to data distribution shifts caused by temperature fluctuations, especially when operational data for specific unde... More >

Origin and Evolution of the South Sichuan Basin Danxia Landform: Insights into Broader Chinese Danxia Landform Development
Journal of Geo-Energy and Environment | Volume 1, Issue 2: 76-87, 2025 | DOI: 10.62762/JGEE.2025.503978
Abstract
Danxia landform, recognized for its steep cliffs and red coloration, has drawn significant scientific attention. While Chinese Danxia Landforms are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, their genesis and evolution, particularly in less-explored regions, remain under study. The southern Sichuan Basin, one of China's three largest Danxia outcrop areas, offers a unique case study due to its distinct geological setting and limited research. This study investigates the genesis of Danxia landforms in the southern Sichuan Basin using a multi-faceted approach. Field observations documented geomorphological characteristics and stratigraphy of the Danxia formations. Tectonic analysis, using regional structural... More >

Life Cycle Assessment of Iridium Production: Environmental Impact Analysis Based on Brightway2
Journal of Geo-Energy and Environment | Volume 1, Issue 2: 70-75, 2025 | DOI: 10.62762/JGEE.2025.365181
Abstract
This study aimed to quantify the comprehensive environmental footprint of primary iridium production, a critical yet exceptionally scarce metal, to inform more sustainable practices in its supply chain. The research method employed a cradle-to-gate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) using the Brightway2 framework, establishing a detailed inventory model for iridium production. The environmental impacts for the functional unit of 1 kg of refined iridium were evaluated using multiple impact assessment methods. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to assess parameter uncertainties. The results conclude that iridium production imposes a substantial environmental... Experimental Study on the Influence of Water-rock Interaction on the Mechanical Characteristics and Creep Behavior of Shale
Journal of Geo-Energy and Environment | Volume 1, Issue 2: 61-69, 2025 | DOI: 10.62762/JGEE.2025.256463
Abstract
In shale reservoirs, fracturing fluid can be easily absorbed into the pore space due to the strong capillary force of shale. These invading fluids can impact the rock mechanical properties and creep behavior characteristics of shale under water-rock interaction. This paper discussed the influence of water-rock interaction on the mechanical parameters and creep behavior of shale rocks based on shale hydration swelling experiments, acoustic-triaxial compression tests, and shale creep experiments. The experiments show that: There are two stages of shale hydration swelling: rapid swelling stage and stable swelling stage. Temperature mainly impacts the hydration swelling rate, while the type of l... More >

Spatiotemporal Patterns and Driving Factors of Vegetation Carbon Sinks at the County Scale in the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle
Journal of Geo-Energy and Environment | Volume 1, Issue 1: 46-60, 2025 | DOI: 10.62762/JGEE.2025.856697
Abstract
To address two critical gaps in vegetation carbon sink (VCS) research---its limited policy relevance at the county scale and the insufficient identification of nonlinear interactive effects within driving mechanisms---this study focuses on the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle (CCEC). Using MODIS NPP data (2002--2022), we examined the spatiotemporal dynamics of VCS through time-series analysis, standard deviational ellipse, and spatial autocorrelation analysis. Crucially, we applied the Geodetector model to quantitatively disentangle the roles of natural and anthropogenic drivers. The results show that: (1) VCS followed a fluctuating upward trajectory, peaking in 2019, but declined sharply i... More >
